Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
